Solar Sleep System
This body of work presents a series of abstract charcoal drawings created in response to Solar Sleep System, the new EP by composer Todd Baker. Immersing in the deep, resonant soundscapes of the record, the drawings translate sonic atmosphere into physical gesture — exploring the tension between stillness and movement, gravity and drift.
Working intuitively, each piece responds to the EP’s layered textures and vast tonal depths. Dense charcoal fields echo the weight of low-frequency vibrations, while sharp, gestural marks cut through the surface like distant signals travelling across space. Smudged gradients and erased passages suggest cosmic dust, orbital paths, and the slow pulse of unseen systems beyond our atmosphere.
Rather than illustrating the music, the series acts as a parallel experience — a visual meditation shaped by rhythm, resonance, and silence. The immediacy of charcoal, with its capacity for both precision and collapse, mirrors the EP’s balance between structure and expansiveness.
Solar Sleep System becomes both soundtrack and catalyst: an exploration of how sound can inhabit space, and how gesture can make the invisible felt.
